How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor.
